Affordable Smart Home Technology

Technology is becoming so integrated into our everyday lives and that's a good thing! It can make our lives easier, more manageable, and provide services to us that were never even considered before as a possibility. One place it’s starting to make a difference is in our homes often referred to as “smart homes”.  Up until recently smart home technology was considered to be only something that you would see in million dollar homes, but that has changed.

Nest has changed the landscape of smart homes and made it more accessible and affordable to anyone. Nest started in a garage in Palo Alto in 2010 as a 16 person start-up and has since grown into a successful company which was acquired by Google in 2014 for $3.2 billion only to see the technology and product offering further grow and expand under Google’s direction.  Nest offers digital home thermostats, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as webcams for indoors and outdoors that are all interconnected on one's home Wi-Fi network and are controlled and monitored by a mobile phone app or a web browser.

With these devices connected to your home Wi-Fi network, they all “talk” to each other and monitor what is happening with each of the devices.  For example, when you leave home with your mobile phone in your possession, the location of your phone tells the system to go into “away” mode.  Based on your preset preferences, the away mode will adjust the home temperature during the summer months of 72 degrees to maybe 76 degrees while you’re away from home to conserve energy.  In the winter months it would lower the home temperature while you were away to conserve heat. Your home cameras will turn on automatically once you leave home to provide security of the home and in case your smoke detector or carbon monoxide alerts you, you can see what’s happening in your home on your webcam and then alert the police or fire department if needed.

The suite of products are not all required in order for you to have a smart home.  You can pick and choose to buy any combination of products or even just one product to create the smart home that meets your needs.

Whether you want to keep an eye on the babysitter, your pet, save money on heating and cooling, have real-time alerts of smoke or CO even when you’re not home and just have an overall sense of safety and security, Nest offers affordable, simple to setup and use solutions.  Check them out and see if there’s a solution right for you.

As of August 2016, the pricing for the devices is as follows:

Thermostat

$249

Indoor Cam

$199

Outdoor Cam

$199

There are other 3rd party devices that will also work with Nest that control lighting, sprinklers, doorbells and the list will continue to grow over time.
